The historic Cheney Mansion in architecturally rich Oak Park, Illinois was the site of the 2008 Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Show house. Its catering kitchen is used by chefs during cooking classes and by caterers providing food for events held at the mansion. Our commission was to design a kitchen that would be historically appropriate with the mansion yet serve the rigorous demands of chefs and caterers. We replicated the details found in the original butler’s pantry and applied them to a completely reworked space encompassing a main service kitchen, food pantry, and butler’s pantry. A stained and polished concrete floor will stand up to all kinds of traffic, and the central work table is on locking casters which keeps the room flexible for a variety of purposes. But the most exciting element in the space and the only item we were able to salvage was the original German Silver sink found in the butler’s pantry. It was deeply tarnished, and had rust stains, paint and decades of misuse. The caretakers had no idea what it was. But the telltale “S-curve” was right there in the basin and we knew we had an original gem. After much elbow grease it was restored to its original glory, as was the rest of the space. Now this historic gem has been completely re-imagined to serve the needs of this century of guests.
