This kitchen is in a beautifully detailed Craftsman home. The owner wanted to keep the same detailing but have a light, inviting kitchen space. We used beams and vertical trim members, a built-in inglenook-type range alcove, and fully integrated appliances to disguise the machinery. White painted perimeter cabinetry is complimented by an ebony-stained walnut island and breakfront to house the owner’s silver and glass collection, passed down to her by generations of family members. One “happy accident” that turned out to be the delight of the space happened when the owner found a reject stainless steel counter with integrated sink. It was wonderful but two feet short. What to do? We came up with narrow drawer stacks that pop up to the height of the windowsill, added brackets to their sides, wrapped the Carrera countertop on those drawers and the sill and voila! A delightful design detail emerged as a result of a problem. This kitchen was recognized by eminent judges to be a national winner in the 2002-2003 Kitchen Design Contest.
